“This is why one could say that weariness does not constitute an empirical time, a crisis, an organic event, a muscular episode – but a quasi-metaphysical dimension, a sort of bodily idea: the very touch of endlessness. […]”
From Roland Barthes: The Neutral
In Weary, three dancers have forgone the vertical in favour of the horizontal. Here, the female body becomes not a sign nor a symbol but instead demands a right to remain unfixed
Henrike Kohpeiß, Catalina Insignares, Carolina Mendonça, Else Tunemyr and Zuzana Žabková met during their studies for the MA in Choreography and Performance at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen, Germany. The structure of their collaboration is ever changing. Together they develop various work, affections and affiliations.
“In weary we created movements by (ab)using somatic practices. By copying videos of our own physical exploration, we turned it into something to be shared and reproduced. Solos, duets and trios evolved from this material through repetition, unison, and canon. We kept the entire choreography of weary close to the floor, shifting, turning, and waiting, refusing an erectile verticality, a rush or a climax. It became a resilience practice, another way to exist in this word.”
